Landes (40)

LandesLandes is part of the region of Aquitaine in south-west France. It borders with the departments of Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne, Gers, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Landes is the second largest department of France (Gironde is first).

The Atlantic Ocean runs down the west of Landes. This is known as the Côte d’Argent (Silver Coast) for its long sandy beaches.

The Landaise forest (one of the largest forests in Europe) was created by Napoleon in a successful attempt to reclaim marshland. Today much of the forest is managed and protected by the Gascony Moors Natural Regional Park.

Inland the countryside of Landes is more agricultural and vineyards in the east of the department produce the world renowned liqueur Armagnac.
