VendeeVendée is a department of the Pays-de-la-Loire in west central France. The department used to be part of the province of Poitou and known as Bas-Poitou. Today the department borders Loire Atlantic and Maine-et-Loire in the north, Deux-Sévres in the east, and Charente Maritime in the south. The name comes from the Vendée river running through the south-east of the department.

The department borders the Atlantic Ocean on the west with over 200 Km of mostly sandy beaches, otherwise known as the Côte de la Lumière (Coast of Light). Combined with its mild climate (Vendée rests just behind the Côte d’Azur for the most hours of sunshine per year in France) it is no surprise that tourism is the biggest industry in Vendée.
