Named after the Sarthe River, Sarthe is at the north of the region of Pays-de-la-Loire. The department changes from the pastures in the north (on the borders of Normandy) to vineyards in the south (along the Loire Valley). Sarthe is bordered by the departments of Orne, Eure-et-Loir, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire, Maine-et-Loire and Mayenne.
The department of Sarthe boasts over 200 castles, manors, abbeys and cathedrals. Roman fortifications and baths can still be seen in the town of Le Mans; otherwise the roman influence is found throughout this department, famous for its straight roads. In contrast the Sarthe river meanders across the department and is well known for its scenic boat trips.
