Poitou-CharentePoitou Charentes is a beautiful, tranquil region halfway down the western side of France. It is known for its long Atlantic coast with its fine sandy beaches and smart resort towns like Royan and La Rochelle, one of most picturesque and historically rich cities on the Atlantic coast.

Offshore there are a number of attractive islands, including Oléron and Ré. This stretch of coast is known for its oysters and salt marshes and is reputed to receive more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in France apart from the Mediterranean coast. Just inland is the Marais Poitevin, also known as Venice Vert, a serene and lush expanse of fields and pretty villages intersected by a network of canals created by monks in the eleventh century. The area can be explored by hired boat.

The region has many pleasant towns to explore, including the mediaeval Parthenay and the handsome town of Cognac, known for its world-famous brandy. Saintes, on the banks of the Charente, has many reminders of its Roman past, including an impressive amphitheatre. Just outside Poitiers is Futuroscope, a theme park dedicated to cinema and special effects with what is said to be the biggest screen in Europe.

Rivers criss-cross this region, and agriculture is one of the major sources of income here, including dairy, wheat, sunflowers, melons and maize. Towards the south of the region there are many vineyards.

In coastal areas, the climate is pleasant all year round, matching the temperatures on the south coast of France. Inland regions feature warm dry summers, with the threat of temperatures well below freezing in winter.
