Orne is the home to Camembert cheese
Orne (61)
Orne is a department in the northwest of France, named after the river Orne. It is in the region of Basse-Normandie neighbouring Eure, Eure-et-Loir, Sarthe, Mayenne and Calvados. It is the only department of Normandy without a coast. The river Orne runs through a rugged landscape that resembles the Alps, hence this area is known as “Suisse Normandie.”
The department of Orne has its own local dialect, known as Augeron. Alençon is the main town of Orne and the village of Camembert in Orne is home to the cheese with the same name.
