Midi Pyrénées

Departments:  Aveyron, Ariège, Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées, Lot, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne

In the south-west of France, the Midi Pyrénées is France’s largest region, stretching from Perigord to the Pyrénées and from Aquitaine to Languedoc. Due to its sheer size, it offers many different landscapes. The region contains eight departments, each with its own different character, from high barren plateaux and rocky gorges, to dense forest and wonderful mountain scenery.

Perhaps the best-known department among foreign buyers is the Lot, which borders the Dordogne. This is a hot, dry landscape of limestone plateaux intersected by deep river gorges and beautiful fortified villages. The Lot valley is popular among walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers.

To the south of the region, the hills rise to the dramatic landscape of the Pyrénées, great for skiing, rafting, climbing, paragliding or simply enjoying the scenery on foot. Here is the little town of Lourdes, renowned for its miraculous cures and visited by nearly three million tourists each year.

Toulouse is the largest city in the region and one of the finest and most attractive in France, with its wonderful shops, museums and cultural life. This prosperous city attracts high-tech businesses and has the largest aero-space centre outside Paris. In the more rural areas of the region, agriculture is still a major source of income, particularly dessert grapes, prunes, melons, garlic, apples and sunflowers.
