Gironde is a coastal region of Aquitaine in south-west France, surrounded by the departments of Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, Dordogne, Charente-Maritime and the Atlantic Ocean on the west. Gironde is the largest department in France.
Gironde has almost 130 km of sandy beaches and is known as the Côte d’Argent (Silver Coast). There are also a series of lakes along the Gironde coastline, making this a popular area for water sports.
The Gironde estuary is the largest in Europe. Many rivers run across the centre of the department, through the fertile vineyards for which Gironde is probably best known. The town of Bordeaux is in the middle of the department.
The east of the department has 480,000 hectares of pine woodland popular with walkers and hikers
