The agricultural department of Charente is situated in the south east of Poitou-Charentes. The capital of Charente is Angouleme. The capital city has two distinct areas - the old town and the new town. The old town with its ancient 15th-17th century buildings and narrow streets is situated on a hill looking over on the lively new town. The town is surrounded by vineyards, which fuel the local economy. Since 18th century the region has been best known as the home of Cognac. The drink is available in several vintages. Until it is ready for blending, it is aged in oak barrels. The best quality Cognac is aged for as many as 40 years. There are a number of distilleries in the region. Most of these offer free tours and tasting sessions.
