Pyrénées-Atlantiques (64)

Pyrénées-AtlantiquePyrénées-Atlantiques is a department in the region of Aquitaine in the southwest of France. Its name comes from the Pyrénées Mountains on the east and the Atlantic Ocean on the west. Pyrénéés-Atlantiques shares its southern border with Spain. Otherwise it is bordered by the French departments of Landes, Hautes-Pyrénées and Gers.

Pyrénées-Atlantiques was formerly the provinces of Guyenne, Béarn, Gascony and part of the northern Basque Country. The traditional languages of Gascon and Basque still survive in parts of the department.

Pyrénées-Atlantiques is a land of contrast. The west coast is renowned for its warm climate, sandy beaches and resorts; notably Biarritz. The east of the department is renowned for the snow capped Pyrénées mountains, skiing and the Parc National des Pyrénées. In-between the natural slopes of the department and the warm, dry climate is perfect for vineyards.
