When this area was inhabited by the Gauls it was known as the county of Périgord. This was formed by four areas: Périgord Vert (Green Périgold) a green fertile area in the north crossed by rivers and streams, around the town of Nontron; Périgord Blanc (White Périgord) an area of limestone in the centre of the department around the departments capital, Périgueux; Périgord Pourpre (Purple Périgord) an area of vineyards and wine around Bergerac, in the south-west of the department; Périgord Noir (Black Périgord) an area of oak and pine woodland around the town of Sarlat in the south-east of the department. The south-east of Dordogne also contains many important prehistoric sites.
